Homeowner guide / Documentation
Create a clear record of what happened.
A good record helps you explain the sequence to the insurer and the people assessing repairs. It does not decide whether a policy covers the loss.
Timeline
Write down what you know.
Record when you discovered water, the suspected source, actions taken to stop it and who you contacted. Distinguish observations from guesses.
Photos and belongings
Capture the condition safely.
Photograph rooms, visible material damage, affected belongings and repair work before conditions change when safe. Keep original files and avoid entering hazardous areas to take a picture.
- Wide room view and closer material details
- Dates, receipts and emergency-work invoices
- Names and dates of insurer and contractor conversations
Claim process
Use your insurer’s instructions.
Texas Department of Insurance guidance explains claim steps and recordkeeping. Ask the insurer about deadlines, mitigation, inspection and payment; policy wording controls coverage.
Sources worth opening
Use the primary guidance.
Next conversation
Know the damage. Ask about the whole job.
Bring the affected address, rooms, source and photos to a qualified assessment when an approved provider route is available.
